What thickness should the plasterboard panels be for a partition wall?

For a partition wall to feel solid and provide proper insulation, the standard thickness for residential use is 13mm or 15mm plasterboard. Anything thinner can give a feeling of fragility. Ideally, when installing a plasterboard partition wall, a 46mm or 70mm metal frame should be installed, and one board (or even two for improved acoustics) screwed to each side, always filling the cavity with rock wool insulation. This results in a robust wall that doesn't sound hollow when tapped.

Can I use just joint compound without using tape?

Absolutely not. Joint compound alone fills the gap, but it has no tensile strength. If you join two plasterboard panels with only compound, as soon as there's the slightest temperature change or settling of the building, a crack will appear along the entire joint. It's the tape (paper or mesh) that "reinforces" the joint and ensures that the plasterboard wall behaves as a single, stable unit over time.

Can heavy things be hung on a plasterboard partition?

Yes, no problem, but use common sense. A well-installed plasterboard partition can support a lot of weight, but you need the right anchors. For medium loads like large pictures or light shelves, use specific plasterboard anchors (umbrella or toggle type) that open behind the board, distributing the force. If you're going to hang a kitchen cabinet or a very large and heavy TV, it's best to plan ahead and reinforce the internal structure before closing the wall, or use a magnet to locate the metal studs and screw directly into them.

How long should you wait before painting after applying joint compound?

Patience is key to a good finish. The drying time for joint compound varies greatly depending on the temperature and humidity in your home. Air-drying compounds can take between 12 and 24 hours to be ready for the next coat or sanding. If you touch the compound and it feels cold or damp, don't paint yet, or the paint will blister. If you're in a hurry, there are quick-setting powder compounds that harden quickly, but they require you to work more quickly.

What happens if plasterboard panels get wet?

It depends on the type of board. Standard plasterboard has a gypsum core that absorbs water easily; if it gets very wet or continuously wet, it will disintegrate and lose its strength. That's why, in damp areas like bathrooms, it's mandatory to use plasterboard partitions with water-resistant boards (the green ones). Even so, in areas of direct contact with water, such as inside a shower, we always recommend applying a liquid waterproofing sealant to the boards before tiling, just to be on the safe side.
